Study Abroad Japan: How to care for Japanese Ceramics

Japanese Ceramics are a collectors item in the west. Japanese ceramics are handmade, have unique shapes, colours and designs and make a great souvenir to take back home.

Here are a couple of guides to help you get the best from your Japanese ceramics

* After buying and bringing home, unwrap and soak in hot water before using this will help the ceramics to keep their colour and stop cracking.

* Earthenware, colour glazed and those with silver or gold ceramics cannot be used in a microwave oven

* Unglazed ceramics may leak so its a good idea after soaking to dry them and to rub a mix of rice gruel over them and leave them to sit and dry over night. Next morning wash the dried gruel off, rinse and let dry.
